Today, I was allowed the chance to sleep in for the first time in probably three weeks. Instead, my dogs woke me up to be fed around 5:30 this morning. ugh.
As I came begrudgingly down the stairs and, as a habit, opened the front door to reach for the newspaper, this is the headline that met my fingertips:
DEATH PENALTY FOR FELL! Jury calls for execution in state's first capital case since 1957
Now this is an interesting thing. One man ruthlessly beats to death three people in one day. Does this mean he is unfit to serve as a fellow member of the living human race? I know there are plenty of people who are out there, protesting that "two wrongs don't make a right you damn republican bastards!!" and there are even more people on the fence, indecisive or apathetic to the whole thing, but I'm actually not against the death penalty which, frankly, surprises even me. Since the whole evolution process has basically come to a standstill, what with us having destroyed nature and created a whole technological system of keeping ourselves alive through almost anything, I think capital punishment is at least a way of sorting out the genes that no one would want passed on. Whether you like it or not, crime and poverty (etc.) are vicious cycles. If a child is born to a criminal, that child will learn to accept the misbehavior of its parent as a legitimate part of American society. Same deal with poverty. If a child can't go to college, isn't given a decent education or taught acceptable behavior, that child will only grow up to be what their parents were. It's as simple as that. And honestly, we have a major overpopulation problem anyway.
Ok, maybe I'm harsh. Or at least you think so. But this is the way life works. Everybody dies sometime. We are lucky that there are no longer children dying in factory machines and adults getting horrible diseases and all of that, but with all this new technology for saving ourselves presents the need for more technology in order to accomodate for everyone who, by nature, would have been dead a long time ago. Don't get me wrong, if it were not for modern medicine, I would have two siblings gone already. But I don't believe that humans will conquer nature, which is obviously what we're all trying to do, whether we realize it or not.
I am also pro-choice, not because I am in favor of abortion; I despise it. I never plan on doing it and I hope I never know someone who does it, because it's a horrible thing, but I know there are worse things, you see? I know there are very desperate women with coathangers who will execute some sort of procedure or another if abortion is illegal, who will only hurt themselves in the process. Abortion is not a bandaid for a broken condom or a quick fix for one stupid night. Abortion is to keep much much worse things from happening, and of course needs to be strictly regulated.
Politics in general are a funny thing. There is never a black or white situation, but people nonetheless will defend their side with a zealous passion. I could never fully associate myself with either side for fear of being jaded by this enthusiasm.
wow...that was a lot of opinionated writing, for me. I think I'll go sit in a corner for a while and practice being easy-going and open-minded again before I turn into my mother. egad. cheers.
